Outstanding Higher School Certificate results for Gymea in 2024
We congratulate Year 12 2024, for the outstanding performance in this year‘s Higher School Certificate. There is a continued growth in performance at HSC level at Gymea that is seeing our students achieve university offers at their preferred institution in their preferred courses. Our Year 12 students have gained exceptional results across all learning areas with outstanding increased achievement as distinguished achievers as well as notable invitations with Callback and Onshape to recognise students in performing arts and with talented projects in multimedia.
Each year we invite Year 12 back to a morning tea to connect with each other and their teachers to help celebrate their results and discuss the successes of their pathways ahead. So many students celebrated with each other, sharing their results and their future pathways as they thanked their teachers and applauded each other‘s accomplishments.
We are very proud of our Year 12 students for their strong application to learning with demonstrated strong commitment and perseverance throughout their senior course as their eyes were continually set on the task ahead. Our HSC teachers are proud of the outstanding accomplishments of year 12 and are also congratulated for their commitment and perseverance to support each child to reach their potential.
We will share more detail of these achievements of the outstanding results of Year 12 2024 HSC, including spotlighting some of the wonderful pathways ahead for each of them. Thank you to our families and to the teachers for the amazing support throughout the senior years that has enabled a terrific outcome for our students in the 2024 HSC year.

Rewarding the outstanding accomplishments of our High Potential and Gifted Students from years 7 through to 11 was undertaken at our annual presentation evening in this last week of school. It was a night that provided individual acknowledgement to every award winner, with strong applause and proud smiles from both students, families and school staff.

Thank you to the Gymea Technology High School P&C Association for sponsoring awards for the academic dux across the year groups. A huge thank you to our special guests who sponsored and presented special awards in areas across academics, sports, technologies and active citizenship across all areas of school life. Our Deputy Principals presented our prestigious honour awards to those students who performed at the top of their cohort across most of their courses this year. Our Year Advisers proudly presented first place medals to students across all courses in all year groups.

2024 Annual Presentation Program
Junior STEM girls explore STEM spaces at the University of Technology Sydney in a visit to code sensor in a robotics challenge.
Our High Potential and Gifted Education STEM girls were recently invited to visit the University of Technology Sydney, where they engaged in hands-on STEM activities and heard from inspiring young professionals and academic UTS Alumni. The experience highlighted the endless opportunities available to them and affirmed that with focus and determination, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. The girls enjoyed the day and left feeling inspired to pursue their passions with the knowledge that Girls Can Do.
Year 10 students so respectfully enjoy a formal celebration with our staff to mark the end of year 10.
The Gymea Technology High School Year 10 Formal, held at Sharkies Kareela, was a night to remember. With the venue transformed into a dazzling space of ballons, lights and laughter, students arrived dressed to impress, radiating excitement for the end of Junior school. The event kicked off with a sit-down meal, where everyone gathered to share stories, take photos at the Photobooth, and celebrate the end of an incredible year. Another highlight of the night was the music. George Molchanyuk, a talented Year 9 student, took to the DJ decks and brought the dance floor to life with his exceptional musical set-list. The energy was contagious, with students showcasing their best dance moves and Mr Marsh’s paparazzi photography, capturing memories that will last a lifetime. As the evening drew to a close, it was clear that the Year 10 Formal was not just an event—it was a celebration of friendships, milestones, and the spirit of GTHS.
School prefects connecting staff and students with Christmas cheer through their “Merry Mail” initiative.
Santa’s little helpers were hard at work spreading holiday cheer across the school today! As part of their first fundraising initiative, our 2025 Prefects spent the past week selling Christmas cards and candy canes to our school community, finishing with a fun-filled day of delivering personalised messages while dressed in their best festive attire. A big shout-out to our Prefects for kicking off their leadership journey with such joyful spirit!

BE INSPIRED: Our History Extension students kick off the first day of an ongoing mentoring program with the University of Sydney. Our students have been paired with university students who will mentor them over the next year, helping with research for their major work: the history project.
GTHS Students Competes at the Australian Open Universal Robotics Challenge
We are incredibly proud of our Year 7-9 students from Gymea Technology High School who showcased their hard work and dedication at the recent Australian Open Universal Robotics Competition held at Homebush. Throughout this year terms, these talented students have poured their hearts into preparing for this competition, exemplifying the spirit of innovation and collaboration, reminding us all of the critical importance of STEM education and the vital role women play in this field.
Congratulations to Alex Rankin of Year 10 on his strong performance in the NSW State Swimming Championships this month, placing in the top half of the performers in all four of his races!
Congratulations to Alex Rankin of Year 10 who was not only recognised at our Annual Presentation evening for his outstanding commitment to his studies in 2024, but who also competed in the NSW State Swimming Championships earlier this month.
Alex competed in four races achieving 3 personal best times and demonstrating his strongest performance to date, placing:
• 32 out of 94 in the 50m Freestyle with a personal best time of 26.00
• 30 out of 35 in the 200m Individual Medley with a time of 2:25.13
• 36 out of 60 in the 50m Butterfly with a personal best time of 28.25
• 35 out of 42 in the 100m Freestyle with a final personal best time of 57.06
Although qualifying for the state competitions last year, Alex unfortunately missed 3 of his races due to injury, so his impressive comeback this year is something to be celebrated. Well done Alex!
Year 7 get ready for summer by learning vital swimming and life saving skills
With a hot summer approaching, it was great to see the entire year 7 group participate enthusiastically in a range of aquatic activities, including swimming and essential lifesaving skills, like rescue techniques, water entries and exits, survival skills, first aid and emergency assessment. This important life skill initiative also supported their learning in the Term 4 PDHPE unit “Living a Safe and Active Life”. Congratulations Year 7- we know you’re ready for plenty of beach days this summer!
Exploring the mysteries of enigma, our High potential and gifted Year 9 History students crack some History codes
Our Year 9 History students enjoyed a High Potential and Gifted Education unit exploring communication technology through a code breaking. Inspired by the Enigma Code, they have solved logic puzzles, studied the history of communication, and built Morse Code machines to send and decode messages.
Outstanding Interschools Mountain Biking Success for the Stirling Boys
Congratulations to Aidan and Nate Stirling for their success in last Friday at Rocky Trails MTB race. The boys had to complete 4 different courses designed to test different elements of the mountain. They could attempt each course 5 times with the best result (fastest time) counted towards ranking.
Aidan came 6th out of 93 in his category of years 9 and 10. His overall rank out of all contestants was 12th.
Nate came 3rd out of 146 in his category of years 7 and 8. Nate’s overall rank out of all contestants was 13th (he was hot on Aidan’s heels).
Gymea successes at New South Wales Combined High Schools Athletics
Congratulations to two of our students success at the NSW CHS State Athletics Championships, featuring the best government school athletes from across the state. The highlight was Mia Greacen who won a SILVER medal in the Girls 16 Years 100m, highlight Mia as the second fastest in all NSW government schools for her age group. Outstanding!

Parachuting into the exploration of forces in science for our high potential
Our Year 8 Science Y students explored some forces experiments as part of a special extension unit designed and delivered as part of the HPGE program. Student undertook gravity-based forces experiments to test the pull in gravity with parachutes they made in class to further delve into the study of velocity.
Real world livestream sporting commentary makes its mark at Gymea Technology High School
Two Gymea students, Harvey and Cooper were successfully chosen to represent our school as part of the student livestream commentary team at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships. Harvey and Cooper both developed in confidence and competence in calling track races and colour commentary for field events, earning a lot of praise from key staff at the NSW School Sport Unit. Congratulations Harvey and Cooper on making the most of this opportunity.
Year 7 get moving in sports with local schools at the annual Sutherland Zone Gala Day
Our Year 7 students enjoyed a fun-filled day of physical activity at the annual Sutherland Zone Gala Day. Students participated enthusiastically in a round robin format of soccer, oztag or net court games, against teams from other schools. They were excellent ambassadors of Gymea Technology High School and enjoyed the opportunity to form a friendly rivalry with their peers in neighbouring schools. Congratulations to our excellent Year 9 and 10 PASS student coaches who assisted in mentoring their Year 7 teams and ably assisting teaching staff with refereeing and administrative roles on the day.
BE INVOLVED: Table Tennis Tuesday – Students connect for healthy competition on our outdoor table tennis space
Table Tennis Tuesday is a lunchtime initiative that is designed to encourage physical activity as well as social connections and emotional wellbeing. Students and staff have been testing their table tennis skills as well as building their social networks. Not only are our students having lots of fun, they are also strengthening friendships and confidence in their abilities through the Table Tennis Tuesday initiative.
Creativity and critical thinking competition on “Designing for Accessibility” sees Gymea gain 3rd place in the Australian Competition
Ari, Henry and Will from Year 7 recently competed and placed 3rd in the 2024 Australian Esport League (AEL) Minecraft Schools Series 2. Under the team name of Harim Homes, they worked on crafting a world around the theme of “Designing for Accessibility”, basing their design around creating an accessible furniture store. The competition tested their creativity and critical thinking, and the impressive results reflected their hard work. Congratulations to Ari, Henry and Will for their excellent result.
Stepping it up for our High Potential and Gifted stream with creativity in art influencing creativity in sustainability house design
Students demonstrated the power of art to influence ideas in sustainability. Through a challenge to investigate and collaborate ways to create a sustainable, carbon-efficient lifestyle in treehouses where families can adopt eco-friendly practices and design choices to minimise environmental impact. In Visual Arts, students consider aesthetically pleasing architectural designs and clever engineer structures to design and construct a model treehouses.
Nurturing our future entrepreneurs through a real world delivery of a business design at our annual Market Day
Year 10 Commerce students brought their classroom learning to life by through the delivery of a Market Day, showcasing unique business concepts and business plans that appealed to a market audience in their school community. Working in teams, they developed, set up, and operated their own mini businesses, gaining hands-on experience in all aspects of running an enterprise. The event was a huge success, featuring a variety of creative stalls and generating revenue, part of which will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Congratulations to our Year 10 entrepreneurs!
Dream big workshops engaged and inspired student in their learning and self care
Student dream big through workshop thoughtfully crafted to engage, inspire, and motivate students in recognising the power of education, self-care, resilience, goal setting, and unlocking their potential. Through hands-on activities like creating vision boards, our Aboriginal students explored “deadly” success secrets, and hearing from Gamilaroi woman Kylie Captain, our students were encouraged to truly embrace the art of dreaming big.
Outstanding success for our HSC Multimedia students with three nominations to SHAPE 2024
Congratulations to Zach, Nikki and JD who have had their Industrial Technology Multimedia Major Projects nominated for inclusion in SHAPE 2024. SHAPE is a selection of outstanding works from HSC Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design students and will be held at the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct from March 2025. Being nominated for SHAPE is an incredible achievement and we wish you all the best for the final selection process undertaken by NESA in early December.
Congratulations to Lana M of Year 11, competing against schools across the state to achieve third place in the NSW ‘Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition!’
A huge congratulations to Lana M of Year 11, one of our 2025 Vice Captains, for her exceptional performance in the 2024 Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition. As a top 10 NSW finalist, Lana presented her innovative business idea, which focuses on supporting individuals with mild dementia and their caregivers, to a panel of industry professionals. Out of 168 Division One entries, Lana achieved an impressive third place in NSW. We are incredibly proud of her dedication, drive, and commitment to excelling beyond the classroom.

Throughout Term 3, students in Years 7 – 10 have participated in a variety of Digital Technology Competitions, including ICAS Digital Technologies, AMT Australian Informatics Olympiad, AMT Computation and Algorithmic Thinking and Oxford University Computing Challenge.

Year 12 shine submitting their outstanding range of Industrial Technology Multimedia HSC projects
Year 12 Multimedia students have completed and submitted their Major Projects to NESA for marking as part of their HSC studies. Over the last 4 terms, students have developed their knowledge, skills and understanding in the Multimedia industry, utilising the schools state-of-the-art technological facilities to develop projects of industry level quality, setting themselves up for successful careers in industry post school.
Year 10 Forensic Archaeology students develop their investigating skills as Gymea’s Cold Case Detectives
As part of their Psychological Profiling unit, our Year 10 Forensic Archaeology students recently participated in an exciting incursion where they took on the challenge of solving cold cases. Drawing on their understanding of forensic evidence and criminal motives, they were tasked with investigating four unsolved murders and identifying the killer. This hands-on investigation not only deepened their content knowledge but also gave them the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of detectives for an afternoon. Well done, Year 10 Forensics!
Year 12 Design & Technology students present their outstanding array of Major Design Projects for marking
Our Year 12 Design and Technology students presented their Major Design Projects (MDPs) for HSC marking this week. Throughout their HSC year these students have engaged with available and emerging technologies to design solutions to real world problems. Their designs range from built environments, to digital solutions, to physical products. We are so proud of their efforts this year and congratulate them on their success.
Fostering interest and new skills in robotics, our students compete in the 2024 Universal Robotic Challenge: Virtual Robotics Division.
For this year’s Challenge, the contestant’s mission is related to the theme of Robo Health Heroes as contestants will face different health related challenges along the way to complete the mission. The game mission is to complete the game (head to Final Portal).
Connecting to country and culture at the Sutherland Network Aboriginal students excursion to the Royal National Park
Our Aboriginal students from Years 7 to 9 had the privilege of attending the Sutherland Network Aboriginal Education Day at Royal National Park. Throughout the day, they participated in a variety of enriching cultural activities, including traditional dance, stop-motion visual arts, and meaningful conversations in yarning circles with local community members. The event concluded with a bush walk, offering our students the opportunity to deepen their connection to Country. This incredible experience allowed them to embrace their culture while building connections with fellow Aboriginal students from other local public schools.

Year 8 students participated in the statewide VALID Science Assessment on Wednesday 30th of October. They demonstrated a strong commitment to their learning and a dedicated approach to the assessment. Throughout the assessment, they showcased their ability to apply scientific concepts and skills in various contexts. The students worked diligently, displaying critical thinking skills as they tackled a range of tasks. Their engagement in the testing highlighted their growth and understanding of key scientific principles.

As part of our High Potential Gifted Education program, our Year 7 HPGE Mathematics students have been exploring their Data Visualisation topic through a Data and Python Coding unit. An authentic STEM initiative that truly bridges mathematics and technology, our gifted students are working together to discover how to use simple python coding functions to display and analyse big data sets. The code enables them to produce real world displays, allowing these students to critically analyse and produce their own data stories in a way that mirrors the skills required in the senior school! Rainforest Explorers
Last term, our Year 7 students participated in a Geography excursion to Minnamurra Rainforest, immersing themselves in the study of Landscapes and Landforms. During the excursion, students utilised different data collection methods to identify and examine the varied landscapes and landforms within the rainforest. Engaging workshops enhanced their comprehension of the interconnections between natural and human aspects within the rainforest ecosystem. Moreover, students delved into the intricacies of rainforest management and acknowledged the crucial issue of environmental conservation efforts.
Empowering Year 10 HPGE Students: Bringing History to Life Through Peer Teaching and Passion Projects!
Year 10 HPGE students have been immersed in a project that mirrors the structure of senior History projects, fostering critical thinking, readiness for senior studies, and teamwork. They are delving into various areas of historical interest and crafting multimodal presentations and learning materials to impart their knowledge and enthusiasm to their peers. This experience is helping students grasp the demands of senior History, pinpoint their interests in Ancient, Modern, or Extension History, and step into the role of educators in the classroom.

Year 11 Students Soar to New Heights at The Tops Adventure Camp!
Year 11 students had a fantastic time during their two-day adventure camp at The Tops Conference Centre, which was part of their mandatory Life Ready Program. They enthusiastically collaborated and took part in a range of activities including go-karting, high ropes, survivor challenge, and the giant swing. This experience helped to further strengthen their bond as a year group.
Celebrating National Skills Week at Gymea
This week, we are proud to celebrate National Skills Week, which shines a spotlight on the diverse range of lifelong learning opportunities and promising career pathways offered through vocational education and training (VET). During the performance students were chosen to immerse themselves in their learning which included armouring up as Normans and Saxons and participating in demonstrations of Medieval martial arts and period battle-field experiences.

The Medieval performance covered a significant period of time including, the Fall of the Roman Empire, the birth of Islam, the Viking invasions, and the Battle of Hastings. During the performance students were chosen to immerse themselves in their learning which included armouring up as Normans and Saxons and participating in demonstrations of Medieval martial arts and period battle-field experiences.

Students in our Work Studies course have triumphantly completed their first Timber unit by creating stunning timber planter boxes. Throughout this hands-on project, students honed their skills in utilising timber materials and equipment to produce their own functional products.

Gymea Technology High School’s U15s netball team recently faced off against Georges River College Penshurst Girls Campus in an exciting and competitive match. The Year 11 Hospitality students faced an exciting challenge as they put their skills to the test in the ‘Toastie Challenge’ in our very own commercial kitchen. With a focus on the Prepare and Present Sandwiches Unit, students showcased their professionalism and culinary abilities as they expertly plated up toasted sandwiches to meet industry standards.
The Holocaust Museum captures our high potential and gifted classes in a deep reflection of history
One of the most impactful moments came when the students had the privilege of hearing firsthand accounts from Egon a Holocaust survivor. Egon spoke about his experience and brought a profound and personal dimension to their understanding of this time period in history. His moving recollections and emotional narrative deeply resonated with the students, leaving a lasting impression on their perception of the events.
Hospitality students reach far and wide working in industry kitchens
Our Year 11 Hospitality students engaged in their first full week of Work Placement, immersing themselves in diverse commercial kitchens across the Sutherland Shire and St George areas. HSC Students explore design ideas to blend into major projects
The Year 11 Design & Technology and Industrial Technology Multimedia students had the incredible opportunity to visit the SHAPE Exhibition. It was an inspiring experience for everyone involved. The exhibition showcased outstanding Major Projects from last year’s HSC students, giving our students a chance to see firsthand the innovative and creative work of their peers.
