Celebrating Excellence and Rewarding Achievement Across Our School
At Gymea, we are committed to celebrating excellence and recognising the hard work of our students. Year 11 recently enjoyed a vibrant Celebration Assembly as they begin their HSC studies. Invitations have been sent for the upcoming Rewards Excursion, and students have received their Gymea Dollars for Multicultural Day. Celebration Assemblies continue through Week 9, acknowledging effort across all years. Our annual Presentation Night will be held on Tuesday, 16 December, with invitations already issued. STEMSpire Empowers Girls To Explore Sound And Geometry
STEMSpire, a Year 7 STEM girls group, is designing its own acoustic performance spaces through hands-on exploration of sound and geometry. The students investigate how curves and shapes influence sound reflection, comparing real and virtual spaces to uncover links between circular and parabolic forms. Using lasers to model sound direction, they map wave behaviour with growing confidence. This project strengthens their understanding of science and mathematics while inspiring a lasting passion for technology.

Our High Potential and Gifted Year Seven students have shown outstanding growth over the past two weeks as they applied mathematical concepts well beyond their stage level. With strong collaboration, explicit teaching and rich problem solving, they engaged confidently with advanced ideas. This week, students explored probability challenges, including permutations normally studied in Year Eleven. With assessments complete, these highly engaging lessons offered meaningful enrichment across all learning areas, allowing students to think creatively and continue to shine.

Class formations for 2026 are guided by several criteria to ensure every student is placed where they can thrive. Our High Potential and Gifted Education students are expected to stay committed to all aspects of school life and collaborative learning. William Harding named national finalist in prestigious What Matters? competition
A huge congratulations to our very own William Harding of 8G, who has been named a finalist in the prestigious National What Matters? Writing Competition! This remarkable achievement comes from a competition that drew more than 6,000 entries from over 800 schools nationwide. The What Matters? competition empowers young people to raise their voices on issues that matter to them, reinforcing that their perspectives are valuable and impactful. William’s success is an outstanding achievement and a source of pride for Gymea.
Students Lead World’s Greatest Shave, Raising Funds for Cancer
Our Student Leadership assembly, led by the Year 8 team, proudly hosted Gymea Technology High School’s World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for blood-related cancers. This cause touches so many lives, and it was inspiring to see our school community come together with such energy and compassion. With the help of the team from Hair Management Co Hair Salon in Gymea, students and staff were able to take part in professional shaves and haircuts, supporting research and treatments for those in need.
This year, 16 students and three teachers bravely committed to shaving their heads, cheered on by the entire school. Their courage, along with the sponsorship they worked hard to gain, made a significant contribution. It’s not too late to donate with every dollar helping to make a difference.
Head Start to High School unites future Year 7 students confidently
The Head Start to High School program was a great success, with incoming Year 7 2026 students from over 30 primary schools connecting through three late-afternoon sessions led by passionate Gymea teachers. Parents engaged with school programs and culture through presentations from executive staff, building strong partnerships. Excited students and happy families reflected the program’s impact, which empowers learners to feel confident and prepared emotionally, socially, and academically. Hands-on fieldwork helps HPGE students protect Australia’s threatened wildlife”
Year 10 HPGE students recently took part in an inspiring educational excursion to the Royal National Park, working alongside scientists and a NSW Threatened Species Officer. Tasked with surveying habitats, students applied their scientific knowledge in real-world conservation. Their efforts were rewarded with the exciting discovery of several threatened species, including the vulnerable Giant Burrowing Frog. This hands-on experience offered valuable insight into biodiversity protection and the crucial role of conservation officers. By engaging directly in monitoring activities, students deepened their understanding of ecosystems, developed practical scientific skills, and gained appreciation for the importance of protecting Australia’s unique native wildlife.

Empowering Student Futures with Thoughtful Subject Choices for 2026
Our students in Years 9, 10, and 11 for 2026 made their subject choices for study next year, supported by a well-prepared and engaging process. For Years 9 and 10, guidance was provided during elective selection days, building on the success of dedicated lessons, assemblies, and our highly attended Curriculum Open Night for students and families.
Year 11 2026 students also participated in one-on-one interviews, discussing their long-term aspirations, past achievements, and areas of enjoyment to design a tailored curriculum pathway for their senior years. These conversations ensured that choices were informed, purposeful, and aligned with individual goals.
From here, we will finalise the list of courses based on student preferences. Once verified, individual subject allocations will be confirmed and emailed to students and families. This process reflects our commitment to guiding each learner toward a successful and fulfilling academic journey.
Year 11 and Year 12 Empowered for HSC Success Through Expert Seminars
Year 11 and 12 students at Gymea Technology High School are participating in a series of HSC preparation seminars this term, designed to strengthen their academic skills and boost exam success. Developed and delivered by our experienced executive team of HSC teachers, these workshops focus on effective study organisation, deconstructing exam questions, and writing deeper, high-achieving responses. Year 7 Decode Data with Python in Real-World STEM Experience
Year 7 students are diving into their Mathematics data unit through an innovative coding-based approach. Using Python, they are developing functional coding skills while exploring key data concepts. By working with large data sets—known as big data—students are learning to analyse trends and select appropriate visualisations. This High Potential and Gifted Education initiative is offering students deep insight into the curriculum while immersing them in real-world STEM practices and fostering critical thinking, creativity, and future-ready digital skills. To celebrate a highly successful semester of academic achievement and engagement, Gymea Technology High School hosted a special student rewards lunch. Our teaching staff came together to prepare and serve the event as a way of recognising the dedication students have shown in their learning. Each week, families receive progress summaries highlighting student effort and engagement, with reward points earned throughout the term. Over 70 of our enthusiastic STEM students recently partnered with Engineers Tomorrow for a dynamic, hands-on learning experience that brought engineering to life. In this specialist STEM activity, students had the unique opportunity to hear directly from expert engineers about the crucial role bridges play in connecting communities and transforming infrastructure. Through interactive discussions and practical workshops, students explored the importance of materials, structural design, and engineering principles. Fast paced problem solving brings success to teams of YEAR 7 high potential and gifted students
Our Year 7 high potential and gifted education Mathematics students learn how to problem-solve under pressure! After exploring the functionality of their new scientific calculators, their teachers challenged them to a fast-paced relay race with a difference. Solve four questions correctly and sum their answers to move on to the next level. If the sum was incorrect, they had to work backwards to find the mistake. With four teams almost reaching the maximum level available, we cannot wait to see what other high-level problems they can solve!
Mentored by the Masters: History Extension Students Collaborate with the University of Sydney!
Our History Extension students are actively participating in an ongoing mentoring program in collaboration with the University of Sydney. This week, they joined a Zoom seminar with the Head of the History Department, who shared valuable insights into the principles of historiography. Following the seminar, students worked in breakout rooms with their assigned mentors on their Major Projects, the History Project. They received expert guidance on structure, perspective, and literature.
Outstanding participation rates and race performance at our 2025 Swimming Carnival
Our school Swimming Carnival was another huge success with our students out in strong numbers enthusiastically participating in the full range of swimming events. Exceptional swimmers showcased their talents across events and age groups. Congratulations to all our competitors and well done to our Year 12 relay swimming team for putting on a gallant effort in the student versus staff relay race, despite missing out on taking the first-place honour. Their sportsmanship and encouragement throughout the day created a fantastic atmosphere enjoyed by all.
STEM beats the heat with this challenge enrichment activity for our High Potential and Gifted Science students
Drawing upon their classroom learning in science on waves and heat transfer, our HPGE students in year 9 set off with the challenge to design, create and test their own “esky”. The ultimate test was to keep an ice cube frozen for as long as possible, using the principles of conduction, convection and radiation. They tested their ‘esky’ on a 33 °C day, and all designs tested were able to keep the ice cube frozen! Well done 9SCIG and 9SCI Y
17 of our talented swimmers produce outstanding results at the Sydney East Swimming Championships, qualifying for State!
17 Gymea students headed to Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre to compete in the Sydney East Swimming Championships as part of the Sutherland Zone Swim Team. Our talented swimmers competed in four 4 individual events and in a total of 5 Relay Teams.
All our students competed at a high level and achieved great results. Congratulations to Alexander R of Year 11, Isaak W of Year 7 and our 17+ Boys Relay Team of Daniel M, Thomas S, Oliver L and Alexander R who have all qualified to compete at the NSW CHS State Championships next month. Alex qualified in all 5 of his individual events, Issak qualified in the 100m Backstroke and the highlight of the day went to our 17+ Boys Relay Team who took the first place win in a very tight and exciting race.
Year 7 STEM students meet the challenge to separate the most unconventional science mixtures.
Our STEM Science students in 7SCIG and 7SCIY successfully completed their design challenge as an extension of the curriculum topic ‘Separating mixtures’. Students in teams, designed and built a machine that could separate tennis balls, golf balls and plastic beads using only cardboard, scissors and tape. After designing and creating their apparatus, they presented to teams across the two classes, highlighting key features, and the effectiveness of their machine. It was impressive to see how many designs were highly successful!
Our prefects supporting a connected culture with Valentine’s Day roses and treats across the school bring students and staff together
What has become a tradition at Gymea, our Year 12 prefects kindle love and friendships with lots of smiles and happiness across the school. The Year 12 Prefects initiative surrounds the selling of roses but does so in a way that focuses on positive messaging and connection. Valentine’s Day at Gymea was filled with roses and a stall of cakes to sweeten the day that little bit more.

Gold achieved at the CHS Baseball Tournament for Oliver Locker of Year 12!
Oliver Locker has officially become a NSWCHS Gold Medalist in Baseball! Competing over five days at the state championships, Oliver represented Sydney East with distinction, playing alongside some of the state’s best athletes. His dedication and skill have led to the ultimate achievement, claiming gold in his senior year. This incredible milestone follows his bronze medal in 2024, marking a remarkable rise to the top. Success for Nate S and Mitchell E of Year 9 in the Interschools Mountain Biking Championships
Congratulations to Nate Stirling and Mitchell Edwards of Year 9 who participated in the Interschools Mountain Bike Championships held at Thredbo.
Mitchell performed strongly within the talented riders competing across the state ranking 164th out of 346 riders in a time of 8:29 in the Flow Race and 94th out of 253 Riders in a time of 3:18 and in the Downhill Race.
Nate made it to the podium in the Pump track challenge, placing 3rd. Nate rounded out the other 3 events finishing 10th in Flow, 11th in All Mountain and 18th in Cannonball. Overall, across all events in Nate’s category, saw him placed 6th out of 340 boys.
